Sort of like an RIA 1911 looking like a custom 1911 pistol (outwardly). To an untrained eye. DRO is now quite inexpensive. I have a friend that uses several old dial indicators on magnetic bases. Works fine. The benchtop mill/drills that swing/rotate the head on a big vertical tube to change tooling can be a pain. To get back to zero.
As a semi-retired gunsmith and now gunsmithing instructor, get as big, heavy, and rigid a vertical mill as you can afford and/or fit into your shop. Small mills, just like small lathes, seem to be made of case hardened marshmallows, and greatly limit your ability to do good, repeatable, work.

Present-day mills offer the opportunity to thread, rabbet, route, and drill under manual or digitized controls, but the early milling machines were far more basic. I bought a 1963 rockwell 21-100 vertical knee mill off Ebay for $2500 in 2004. It weighs 800 pounds. I have used it at least once a week for 11 years. A month ago I got a 1969 Bridgeport 2J vertical knee mill off Ebay for $12k. It weighs 2000 pounds.
Most mills are R8 taper, which is the most economical tooling to buy new. The cost of the mill is only the start of course. Tooling will cost more than the mill itself. I probably have $3000 in tooling. Test gauges, parallels, 1-2-3 blocks, collet sets, face mills, end mills, roughers, micrometers, axial gauges, etc, etc...

The Grizzly 9x48'' mill is plenty good enough for .001'' work need in gunsmithing. I would add DROs, the dials are close but not on the money. I have one and it has worked great for my needs. The lathe I am looking at is the Grizzly G-0509G 16" x 40".

I got my mill for $2.5k 6 years ago on Ebay. It is a Delta Rockwell 21-100 vertical 1.5 hp R8 knee mill. It got busted up in shipping to me, and I had to weld it back together. Shipping is a big part of the cost and a big risk. But I have used it once a week for the last 6 years, so I should have got a much better one.

The 833 is a very high quality mill from a materials (castings), and machining standpoint. Necessary for accurate and repeatable positioning IMO. The higher quality castings do a better job of dampening vibrations too, which means you will be spending less time cleaning up tooling marks in whatever you are milling.
